Luther S. Allison Quintet ft. Imani Rousselle

(EDT, UTC-04) (EDT, UTC-04)

Blue LLama Jazz Club, Main St, Ann Arbor

Hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina Luther S. Allison is a multi-instrumentalist specializing in both piano and drum set. In 2017 Allison earned his BM in Studio Music & Jazz from The University of Tennessee and his MM in Jazz Studies from Michigan State University in 2019. Upon graduation, Allison moved to New York City where he quickly became a regular on the bandstand at some of the city’s premiere jazz clubs including Dizzy’s, Smalls Jazz Club, The Jazz Standard, Mezzrow, Smoke Jazz Club, and Minton’s. Allison has performed nationally and internationally alongside the likes of Rodney Whitaker, Jazzmeia Horn, The Baylor Project, Samara Joy, Gregory Tardy, Ulysses Owens Jr. and many more. Outside of his work as a sideman, Allison band-leads his trio, sextet, and octet featuring original compositions and arrangements rooted in his influences from R&B, country, and gospel. Additionally, Allison co-leads a project with dancer John Manzari. Allison accredits a great deal of his compositional inspiration and musical development to his experience playing in the black church along with the sounds of Earth Wind & Fire, Anita Baker, Sly and The Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, and many others playing in his household throughout his upbringing.

Michael Reed is a drummer originally from Toledo, OH, currently based in Michigan, and has been primarily touring with Rodney Whitaker and Grammy-nominated vocalist Jazzmeia Horn.

Bassist Jonathon Müir-Cotton hails from Ann Arbor, MI, but can be seen often on the road with Joe Fansworth and Christian Sands.

Trumpeter Brandon Woody is one of the leaders of the Baltimore jazz scene and is a consummate band leader and sideperson.

Michael J. Reed and The Revelation

(EST, UTC-05) (EST, UTC-05)

Blue LLama Jazz Club, Main St, Ann Arbor

6:30 pm and 9 pm Showtimes Ticket/Reservation info at: bluellamaclub.com/events/michael-j-reed-the-revelation

The Revelation was founded in 2021. Developing this group came at a time when Reed was finding his purpose within the music. Doing some self-reflection, he realized music is the language of the spirit not only designed to make people dance, but to bring peace and love to everyone. Through music, Reed realizes that he is a vessel, striving to fulfill his purpose as an advocate for peace and love. His compositions explore the vulnerability of truth telling and, through that, he knew that he wanted to make sure that his ensemble included people who were not afraid to express theirs. Meeting all the members through the music and instantly having a connection made it effortless to manifest ideas into reality. The mission of the band is to make people think and to seek things within themselves that may be holding them back from their purpose.

THE BAND:

Michael J. Reed - Drums/Compositions

Brendon Davis - Piano/Keys

Brandon Rose - Bass

Kevin Jones - Percussion

Russ Macklem Quintet

(EST, UTC-05) (EST, UTC-05)

Blue LLama Jazz Club, Main St, Ann Arbor

Cost: $35 – $85

No matter what kind of music you’re into, is there anything more thrilling than a five-piece group of musical virtuosos pushing the boundaries to their collective limit? That’s precisely what’s contained on The South Detroit Connection, the debut recording by trumpeter Russ Macklem. The album exudes all the intimate energy of classic recordings from Birdland and the Village Vanguard, but with a modern flair.

Originally from Kelowna B.C., Russ lived and performed in many major North American cities before making his current home base in the Detroit/Windsor area. He has performed with a wide range of artists, from Cecil McBee and Dave Holland to the Marley Brothers, Amp Fiddler, De’Sean Jones and Royce da 5’9”, but with The South Detroit Connection, Macklem makes a powerful case to be included among the most exciting new voices on the North American jazz scene.

“My sound lives on the outskirts of the contemporary jazz scene, secluded from the safety of those playing to the crowd, but maybe familiar to those who have ears for mid ’60s and beyond Miles Davis, Marcus Belgrave, Wayne Shorter, Andrew Hill, Elvin Jones, late Coltrane, Kenny Wheeler, Woody Shaw, and the Avant Garde.” – Russ Macklem

THE BAND:

Russ Macklem: trumpet, compositions

Kasan Belgrave: saxophones

Brendon Davis: piano

Jonathon Muir-Cotton: bass

Michael J. Reed: drums
